Cancel a marketing agency retainer
How to cancel your marketing agency retainer without your ads stopping the next day.
Own the account first. Put the daily management in place. Then cancel. Done in that order, what you lose is the invoice.
The diagnostic scores exactly how much would leave with them.
Own these before you give notice
- Ad account, pixel, page, Instagram: you're admin
- Creative files and copy, in your folder
- Landing pages and the domain
- Email and SMS list, exported
- Spend, cost per lead, best and worst ads
Five items. If they push back on any of them, that's what the retainer was holding.
What should you own before you cancel?
Everything below should live in accounts you control. Check each one before you send the notice. You have more leverage before it than after.
The accounts, with you as admin.
Meta Business Manager, ad account, pixel or dataset, Facebook page, Instagram. You are the admin, not a partner they added.
Every creative file and piece of copy.
Ask for the folder, not the screenshots. Videos, images, captions, all of it.
Landing pages and the domain.
If the page lives in their builder, rebuild or export it before you give notice.
Your email and SMS list.
Exported, with the automations documented so someone else can run them.
The numbers.
Spend by month, cost per lead or sale, the five best and five worst ads. That's your baseline, and right now they have it.
How do you cancel a marketing agency cleanly?
Day 0
Read the notice clause.
Most agreements ask for thirty or sixty days. Follow yours.
Day 1
Give notice in writing. Ask for three things.
A handover list of every asset and access, a final report with your numbers, and one named person for questions during the notice period. Keep it short and polite, because you may want them for a project later.
Notice period
Install the daily management.
Ninety minutes, in your own ad account and Notion. Keep the agency running through it. After a week of briefs you'll know what the retainer was buying.
Last day
A calendar entry, not a crisis.
Leave what's working running. Don't let them “clean up” the account on the way out.
What happens to your ads the week after?
Without daily management.
Campaigns keep running on their own. Nobody notices cost per lead climbing. Tired creative drags the account down for weeks. Budget sits where it was. This is why founders stay in retainers they resent.
With the system installed.
Every morning it tells you what you spent, what came in, what it cost per lead, what's wearing out, and what to do about it. You say yes or no, and it makes the change inside your own accounts.
The offer, the creative, and the landing page remain yours to handle or hand off. Either way, the daily job is no longer anyone's retainer.
How the install worksIs it actually time to cancel?
Three signs we hear again and again:
- The report is screenshots. The number you care about isn't on it.
- Cost per lead went up. You were told to be patient.
- If they left tomorrow, your ads would stop.
That isn't a content problem. It's an ownership problem. The average agency relationship now lasts under two years. Plan for the day after.
Questions
What should I own before I cancel my marketing agency?
Admin on your Meta Business Manager, ad account, pixel or dataset, Facebook page and Instagram account; the creative files and copy; the landing pages and the domain; the email and SMS list; and the numbers (spend, cost per lead, best and worst ads). If any of these live only in the agency's accounts, get them moved before you give notice.
Will my ads stop when I cancel the retainer?
Only if the account depended on someone at the agency managing it every day. Campaigns keep running on their own; what stops is the daily attention: budget changes, creative refreshes, catching cost per lead climbing. Put the system in place before the last day and daily management carries on after the retainer ends.
Do I have to leave my agency before the install?
No. Keep them through the install. After a week of daily briefs you'll know exactly what the retainer was buying, and the handover is cleaner when the system is already running in your own accounts.
What replaces a marketing agency retainer?
For the daily account management: a system that reports every morning and proposes the changes, installed in your accounts. For the offer and creative: your own judgment, written down, plus help when you want it. Running with Strategy's install is $1,500 one time, credited in full toward the $9,000 90-Day Build. A retainer runs $3,000 to $10,000 a month.
